Perhaps the boldest song of the collection, “Owe You” is clearly about someone who doesn’t know their place, and MERLIN is quick to remind them with lyrics such as, “You! Must be fired up cause I won’t be tied up/Woop! Out your Handcuffs, trip and I stand up, You must think I owe you something”. “Spiral” feels like floating in space while contemplating what to do about a push and pull relationship. Plus, the hook of this galactic tune is sure to stay in your head for hours. With the release of Dark Matter, MERLIN showcases her talent and stakes her ground as a force in the world of club/dance music. A clear example of someone who calls the shots and takes what she wants, MERLIN stakes her ground with the release of Dark Matter.

Q:When you decide it’s time to make a new record, is that more exciting or stressful?

Ans: Definitely exciting! When I first make that decision, the possibilities seem endless! It’s really fun to piece concepts together for an individual song and also tie it into a bigger picture. I think the stress usually creeps in through the end right before deciding it’s perfect as is.

Q: How do you shut things out?

Ans: By disconnecting from external feedback, whatever form it may come in, and tuning into myself. I love nature so usually when I start to feel overwhelmed I’ll head to the ocean to meditate. If I can’t get to a place of nature, I’ll journal until I have nothing left to say or start organizing my space if I really can’t sit still. But I’ve definitely had my moments where I’ve booked a last minute trip and just shut off my phone. It’s all in the name of #SelfCare!

Q: How easily do songs tend to come to you?

Ans : I’m always singing random lyrics just to see what comes out and jotting down hooks as I go about my day. But the songs that come easiest usually come while I’m either driving or walking. Needless to say, I’m a big fan of Voice Memos. Then I’ll sit down later with a fresh ear and flush out the lyrics. By that point I’ve already created an image in my head so the rest flows!

Q: You write all of your own music; where do you draw inspiration from when you write songs and what’s your favorite part about the process?

Ans: I draw inspiration from my own life and the stories of others that have had an effect on me. My music is personal and I always try to include what I learned from that experience in the song or project. We all go through things but I want to empower my listeners as well as show them they’re not alone! My favorite part of the process is that flow state you reach where everything starts to fit and make sense on multiple levels. The ideas and melodies that come out of those moments are pure perfection!

Q:Who are your inspirations?

Ans: Growing up they were incredible artists like Tina Turner, Beyonce, Rihanna and Lady Gaga! Currently, I’m a huge fan of Dua Lipa!

Q: If you had a soundtrack to your life what song/songs would have to be on it?

Ans : I AM WOMAN by Emmy Meli, MAN! I feel like a woman! by Shania Twain, Sunlight by The Magician (ft. Years & Years) and any Dua Lipa song ever! Along with my own songs, but of course!

Q:How does the conversation go when someone pitches the performance to you?

Ans: I start to envision everything, every step and movement. Once I get a clear image of how I want it to look and feel, I take a mental snapshot and then start working through logistics from there. I always go with what feels right. Tuning into my intuition and staying authentic to goal has been such a guiding light through this journey!

Q: What’s your motto or the advice you live by?

Ans: I live by the motto “I have all I need”, it’s been my mantra for years. It reminds me to be grateful for what I have and the journey I’ve been on to get to this point. More importantly, it reminds me that I’m worthy of my desires and that I don’t need external validation.

Q: What is your favorite song to belt out at the bar/in the car?

Ans: Any Adele song! My go-to is ‘Hello’ but recently, ‘Easy On Me’ has been my song of choice. But I will not hesitate to sing along LOUDLY to Celine Dion! If you’re in the car with me, just assume you’ll be attending a live show as well.

Q: For our readers who have never heard your music, explain your sound in 5 words?

Ans: Moody, Empowering, Pieces of me!
