An Exclusive Interview With London’s finest up and coming DJ Paula Frost

DJ Paula Frost is one of London’s finest up and coming DJs blending jungle with straight dance. She’s played in 14 countries worldwide and headlined an award show at Camden Roundhouse. Now she’s set to release her debut EP ‘ORBIT’ out 31st May.

Q:When you decide it’s time to make a new record, is that more exciting or stressful?

Ans: Well I have been writing these songs for over 10 months so I finally felt ready to put something out. I love DJing live so needed to take it to the next level and start putting out my own tracks. This EP has 3 songs; Bangkok Beat, Orbit and Jungle War which I’m very proud of.

Q:  How do you put things out?

Ans: I am releasing on my own record label Seizure Records.

Q: How easily do songs tend to come to you?

Ans: I have to sit down with my keyboard and make time to write. First I focus on creating a big chorus melody and then I write around that playing with drum beats and bass. It’s easy to get going but as a perfectionist I find it hard to complete projects.

Q: What’s your motto or the advice you live by?

Ans: I love David Goggins and recommend his book ‘Can’t Hurt Me’ its about releasing yourself from the past and being the best version of yourself possible. Goggins says “Life is pain so choose your pain” which means push yourself forward even if its hard. Also Russel Brand’s book ‘Recovery’ helped me stop drinking and made me a far more productive person. So I’d say just stop hiding from your reality and instead fully engage in life so you can figure out how to make it better without using substances for escapism.

Q: What is you favorite song to belt out at the bar/in the car?

ANs: Satisfaction by Benny Benassi. If I could write a tune like that my life would be made haha

Q:Do you have any events coming up or recordings going on right now?

Ans: A lot of my shows have been cancelled due to Coronavirus but I will have a jam packed schedule at the end of the year and in 2021. At the moment I am writing a lot of music and have seven songs in the works plus a concept for an album.

Q: If you had a soundtrack to your life what song/songs would have to be on it?

Ans : Baz Luhrmann – The Sunscreen Song. Go listen to it, its literally all the life advice you could need squashed into a few minutes.

Q: Is your family musical?

Ans: My family love music but no-one plays anything except me. My dad and brother play a little guitar but not often. We are big music collectors and share our vinyl and CD collection. We all go to a lot of concerts, its our idea of a perfect night out.

Q:  What are your fondest musical memories? In your house? In your neighborhood or town?

Ans: Last year’s Boomtown festival was amazing. Apart from that all of my best memories are surrounded by concerts and music so I just love the festival atmosphere. I played a crazy show in Westminster for Euro Parliament and had hundreds of people from all over Europe losing their minds last year. That was a feeling unlike any other; to speak to the crowd on the mic and have a wall of noise screaming back at you. Woo what a buzz!

Q:  How do you handle mistakes during a performance?

Ans: Just jump on the mic and say “Make some noise!” So everyone screams while you sort it out haha.

Thanks for taking time out of your day:)
